A 4-amino derivative of folic acid, it is a folic acid antagonist. Aminopterin catalyzes the reduction of folate to tetrahydrofolate, and Aminopterin competitively inhibits dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) with a Ki value of 3.7 pM. Aminopterin has anticancer and immunosuppressive activities. Aminopterin is used to study childhood leukemia.
