Malondialdehyde (MDA) is an important free radical metabolite of reactive oxygen species. It is produced when plants are under stress, such as drought, heavy metal pollution, salinization and other environmental pressures. The membrane lipid peroxidation in plant cells is enhanced, resulting in an increase in MDA content. The content of soil malondialdehyde (S-MDA) is mainly derived from the metabolites produced by plants under stress, which are closely related to the antioxidant stress response of plants.
Malondialdehyde (S-MDA) in soil can be condensed with thiobarbituric acid (TBA) under acidic and high temperature conditions to form a brownish red trimethoprim (3,5,5-trimethyloxazole-2,4-dione). Its maximum absorption wavelength is 532 nm. The content of MDA in soil samples can be estimated after colorimetric.
