Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, also known as EDTA, is a complexing agent and blood anticoagulant, and its disodium salt is more widely used. Because ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid can be combined with Mg2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Fe2+ and other divalent metal ions of a chelator. Most nucleases and some proteases require Mg2+ for their action, so EDTA is often used as an inhibitor of nucleases and proteases. It can also be used to eliminate the inhibitory effect of heavy metal ions on the enzyme.
